Glossary — every acronym, decoded
JoSAA, EWS, OBC-NCL, NIRF, NAAC, GFTI, AICTE, NRI seat, Lateral entry — the alphabet soup that decides where you study. Learn it once and never feel lost again.
- AICTE
- Approves and regulates technical institutes (Engineering, Pharmacy, MBA, MCA, Hotel Mgmt, Architecture).
- AIIMS
- 20+ AIIMS across India for MBBS / MD; admission via NEET (UG/PG) + MCC counselling.
- AIQ
- 15% of MBBS/BDS seats reserved for nation-wide merit (counselled by MCC); the remaining 85% is for state quota.
- Apprenticeship
- Govt-stipend hands-on training under National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme — common after ITI / Diploma / Graduation.
- CSAB
- Special / Supplementary counselling for vacant NIT/IIIT seats after JoSAA. Last chance to grab a NIT/IIIT seat.
- CSIS
- Govt subsidises full interest on education loans during the moratorium period for families earning < ₹4.5 lakh/yr.
- CTET
- Eligibility test (now valid lifetime) for teaching in central govt schools (KVS, NVS) and many state recruitments.
- CUET
- Single entrance for 300+ central, state and deemed universities. Replaces individual university tests like DU's CUCET.
- CW
- Special quota in some institutes / state colleges for wards of defence / paramilitary personnel.
- Dual degree
- Offered at IITs and a few NITs — saves 1 year vs separate B.Tech + M.Tech.
- EWS
- 10% reservation for General-category families with income < ₹8 lakh/yr. Certificate must be issued in current financial year.
- Float
- You hold the current seat but stay in the running for any higher-priority choice in any institute.
- Freeze
- You accept the current seat and exit further counselling rounds — no upgrade attempts.
- GATE
- Entry to M.Tech at IITs/NITs and recruitment to PSUs (NTPC, IOC, BHEL, etc.).
- GFTI
- Centrally-funded engineering institutes other than IITs/NITs/IIITs (e.g., IIEST Shibpur, SLIET Longowal).
- IBPS
- Conducts PO, Clerk, SO, RRB recruitment for 11 Public Sector Banks (excluding SBI which has its own).
- IIIT
- Specialised IT-focused institutes; admission via JEE Main (some via own tests).
- IISc
- India's top research university — 4-yr Bachelor of Science + Masters + PhD.
- IISER
- Research-focused 5-year integrated MS institutes (Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Bhopal, TVM, Tirupati, Berhampur).
- IIT
- 23 premier engineering institutes; admission via JEE Advanced.
- Integrated course
- Continuous 5-yr programmes like 5-yr BA-LLB, 5-yr Integrated MSc, 5-yr Integrated MBA (IIM Indore IPM).
- JEE Advanced
- IIT-conducted exam taken by top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers. Sole gateway to all 23 IITs.
- JEE Main
- NTA exam for entry to NITs / IIITs / GFTIs and qualification for JEE Advanced. 2 sessions per year.
- JoSAA
- The single counselling body that allots seats in IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs based on JEE Main + JEE Advanced ranks.
- Lateral entry
- Polytechnic / Diploma holders can directly enter the 2nd year of B.Tech via state lateral-entry tests.
- MCC
- Conducts counselling for the 15% All-India Quota MBBS/BDS seats and AIIMS/JIPMER/AFMS seats after NEET-UG.
- NAAC
- Grades universities and colleges A++ → C based on quality. NAAC A+ is generally needed for many central scholarships.
- NBA
- Accredits individual technical programmes (B.Tech CSE, B.Pharm, MBA…) — distinct from NAAC.
- NEET-UG
- India's only undergraduate medical entrance — covers MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BVSc, B.Sc Nursing.
- NIRF
- India's official ranking system run by the Ministry of Education. Based on Teaching, Research, Outcomes, Outreach and Perception.
- NIT
- 31 government engineering institutes; admission via JEE Main.
- NLU
- 24 NLUs (NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, etc.) admit via CLAT (NLU Delhi via AILET).
- NRI seat
- Higher-fee management quota seat in private medical / engineering colleges, with relaxed eligibility.
- NSP
- Single portal (scholarships.gov.in) for all central + many state government scholarships.
- OBC-NCL
- 27% reservation for OBCs whose family income is < ₹8 lakh/yr (latest cap). Certificate validity: 1 year.
- PG Diploma
- 1–2 year specialised diploma after graduation (e.g., PGDM at IIMs, PGDCA, PGD in Journalism).
- PwD / PwBD
- 5% horizontal reservation for those with 40%+ benchmark disability. Requires UDID card.
- SC / ST
- Constitutional reservation — 15% (SC) + 7.5% (ST) in central institutions.
- Slide
- You hold the seat but only want a higher-priority branch within the same institute.
- SSC
- Conducts CGL, CHSL, MTS, JE, GD constable etc. for Group B & C central government jobs.
- Vidya Lakshmi
- Govt portal where you fill one form and apply to multiple banks for education loans.
- Vidyasaarathi
- NSDL's portal listing 30+ corporate-funded scholarships for school / UG / PG students.
